The machining of crankshafts from bar stock has the negative effect of giving up the inherent strenth produced by forging. A forging starts life as bar stock. So machining from bar stock offers no improvement in chemistry control nor in the control of tramp elements such as sulphur and phosphrous, which are the real cause of inferior strength. Vacuum re-melting and vacuum degassing of bar stock materials are the real solutions.
